Germany’s away shirt for the upcoming European Championship has been officially released and should cause supporters to start buzzing over the color scheme.

The shirt’s base color is jet black, which isn’t a too foreign color for Germany kits. Here’s where it gets interesting, though: the DFB crest and logo are also black, or one could make an argument for metallic gray. This portrays the logos in a very subtle way, making the shirt more fashionable and streetwear-like.The adidas stripes are also black/gray, but the numbers will be white, as they need to be discernible. The only other colors on the jersey are those of the German flag, which adorn the sleeves just like on the home kit. The flag is also featured inside the collar.

This will be the first time that Germany suits up in all black since 2010, when Die Mannschaft reached the semifinals of the World Cup in South Africa. Germany wore their black kit against Ghana, Uruguay, and of course, in the infamous 4-0 drubbing of Argentina. The kit was trimmed with red and gold stripes and gold numbers, and is considered to be one of the best looking Germany kits of all time.

Since then, Germany’s away kits have jumped from color to color, namely green, red, and gray. The last time black was prominently featured on a Germany away shirt was back in 2014, when the Germans won the World Cup in Brazil. The red and black shirt was worn in two games, in the 1-0 win over the United States and the 7-1 destruction of the hosts in the semifinals.

The new away kit will likely debut in the current international break, but may not be used prominently at the European Championship, as Germany will play all of their group games at home. In fact, the last time Germany actually wore their away strip at the Euros was over 20 years ago at Euro 2000.
